New Subaru Impreza Hybrid Sport Announced but Ruled Out For Australian Market
Subaru Impreza Hybrid Sport

While the new Subaru Impreza 2015 range is impressive, many consumers have been interested as to whether the brand intends to create a hybrid variant. This question has been answered with the reveal of the new Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid. However, this first petrol electric Impreza is not likely to be available for the Australian market.

The model will be the second hybrid for the Subaru Japanese market and will follow the XV Hybrid. The new Subaru Impreza uses the same drivetrain which pairs an electric motor and four cylinder 2.0 litre boxer engine with a bank of high voltage batteries.

According to Subaru the new Subaru Impreza Sports Hybrid provides “superb driveability”. It is rumoured that the model will use the Subaru template used on the majority of the range, with the drive sent to all the wheels with the standard spec gearbox of the continuously variable automatic transmission. This template has become synonymous with the performance, drive experience and efficiency offered by Subaru.

The Japanese Impreza Sport Hybrid uses a different fuel test cycle compared to other markets, but is claimed to be 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres. This is less than the Australian rated current CVT model Impreza by 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres, since the Australian model is rated at 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres.

There are also some stylistic changes for the Sport Hybrid which include a roof mounted spoiler, body kit, 17 inch alloy wheels, LED daylight running lights and tail lights, featuring blue accents. The cabin also features “ultrasuede” seat trims on the top spec models and metallic dash finishes, creating a sleek and stylish aesthetic for ultimate passenger comfort.

The new Subaru Impreza model has been specifically designed for the Japanese market. According to David Rowley, national corporate affairs manager for Subaru Australia, this model will not be offered here, but “we’re always interested”. Rowley says that the local arm has “no definite timeline or plan” for a hybrid model for the Australian market.

Although this is bad news currently, this should offer hybrid enthusiasts some degree of hope. After all if the model performs well in Japan and the hybrid segment begins to see greater popularity here, the brand will already have a fantastically developed model to establish in Australia. Subaru have had a number of models which have been developed for their home market that were modified for our local market. This could mean that despite the model being ruled out for Australia currently, it could be a possibility in the future. This would mean that the current 2.0 litre option could be complemented with an even more economical option for those interested in even greater greener driving.
